VATICAN CITY (Reuters) – Pope Francis is continuing his normal recovery from bowel surgery, gradually recovering from work, walking and eating with helpers, the Vatican said on Saturday, adding that his blood tests were satisfactory.
The 84-year-old pope is in hospital after undergoing three hours of surgery on Sunday to remove part of his colon, the Vatican said, which has been severely curtailed.
Francis had a quiet day on Friday, spokesman Matteo Bruni said, adding that he was continuing with the treatment ordered by the pontiff.
“In the afternoon he celebrated Holy Mass in a private chapel and in the evening he dined with those who are helping out these days,” Bruni said in a note.
This is the first time Francis has been hospitalized since he became pope in 2013.
The Vatican has already announced that Francis will deliver a Sunday noon prayer and message from the 10th floor of Gemelli Hospital, where it is reserved for popes.
He will not read the Vatican prayer for the first time since the pope was elected, except when he was away on trips.
