JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) – Insurgents robbed stalls and threw stones at police on Tuesday as the days of violent protests over the imprisonment of former President Jacob Zuma spread to South Africa.
The military was ready to send 2,500 troops, which was larger than the police, and it seemed impossible to prevent attacks on businesses in the home of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng province in Zuma, where the largest city in Johannesburg is located.
At least 30 people have been killed in riots last week when Zuma surrendered to authorities.
Zuma, 79, was convicted last month of challenging a constitutional court to testify in an investigation into high-level corruption in his nine years in office until 2018.
