The U.S. Supreme Court will launch a major abortion lawsuit that will challenge Roe vs. Wade in an attempt to spark slow tensions over abortion rights in America.
The court said Monday it would consider whether abortion bans at the beginning of pregnancy are unconstitutional in a case related to a Mississippi state law banning abortions in 15 weeks. The Roe vs. Wade decision, first handed down in 1973, enshrined the constitutional right to abortion.
The Supreme Court is likely to hear the case this fall, with a ruling in the spring or summer of 2022 – ahead of the midterm elections next November.
It will be the first abortion case to be examined by the U.S. Supreme Court since Conservative Amy Coney Barrett joined the bank last year after the death of liberal Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
As confirmed by Barrett, the nine-member Supreme Court is balanced, 6-3, in favor of judges appointed by the President of the Republic.

A major abortion decision next year could colorize the period between 2022, when Republicans will try to regain control of the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. Abortion rights have long been a mobilizing issue for conservative voters, but it has also pushed progressives in recent years.
