The US will distribute 60 million doses of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccines to India and other nations, according to Biden administration officials.
The move comes after a call by President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday morning.
“Our two nations have suffered a lot,” a senior Biden administration official said in a speech on the movement to inject oxygen, drugs and supplies to India in the evening to manufacture vaccines. “We remember the generosity that India had with us at the beginning of the pandemic.”
The ad is about 1 in 3 cases registered daily with COVID-19 now Indian. In April, the outbreak in India recorded a large number of cases involving horrible hospital and oxygen supplies. About 2,500 deaths a day are reported there, as very few see 5-10 times larger.
National security officials at the Biden administration have said the severe rise in the Indian cases and the ongoing pandemic have justified the release of doses for U.S. firing supplies. Supplies of other vaccines are expected to be available in all U.S. adult plans by June.
The AstraZeneca vaccine is licensed in India, but is still awaiting initial FDA in the U.S. The company has not even formally requested such permission. Before the shot is fired, the FDA will conduct a safety study of these shots. Ten million doses are currently available, and another 50 million are in production. The U.S. had previously launched 4 million AstraZenecas in Mexico and Canada.
“In short, it’s good news, but it’s long overdue,” said Lawrence Gostin of National and Global Health Law at the O’Neill Institute at Georgetown University. “What we are seeing, however, are two classes of vaccines: one for the developed world and the other for the poor. AstraZeneca is not allowed in the US, so it can be given. But the US keeps very effective vaccines in mRNA vaccines. It’s ethically right to do that, but it’s also in our best interests. “
Administration officials said the U.S. will consider sharing more vaccines as supplies in the country increase and the population gets vaccinated.
Over the weekend, the European Union activated its aid program to provide oxygen and health supplies to India, and Singapore and Saudi Arabia also sent oxygen. Russia has also said it will go to India for medical help. The White House announced on Sunday that this was the case sending fans and protective equipment for India.
