This collaboration of photographer-scientists shows the speed of climate change

Climate change is worsening geological time and compressing time scales of natural processes. In photos taken around the world, Ian van Collero it has documented changes reflected in rocks, sediments, and glacier contraction. Van Coller collaborates with scientists who notice his images, emphasizing key geological features. He also uses historical photographs to show the changes, mixing black-and-white images taken by previous expeditions with current landscapes; once snow-capped peaks are hollow rocks.

The muddy core of Montana’s Fairy Lake, perched on the surrounding mountains, shows a thousands of years of vegetative history. Geographer James Benes provided the photograph.
