It was a strange temporary problem on the surface that affected some users and others. But people’s looks were also changing dramatically – the problem is important for an app they use About 100 million people in the US. So I sent the video to Amy Niu, a PhD student at the University of Wisconsin who studies the psychological impact of beauty filters. He pointed out that in China and elsewhere, some apps add a subtle beauty filter by default. When Niu uses apps like WeChat, it can tell that the filter is in place by comparing an image used in the app to a photo that uses its camera.
A couple of months ago, he said, he downloaded the Chinese version of TikToken, called Douyin. “When I turned off the beauty mode and filters, I still see an adjustment on my face,” she said.
Having beauty filters in an app isn’t necessarily a bad thing, Niu said, but app designers are responsible for looking at how those filters will be used and how they will change the people who use them. Despite a temporary mistake, it can affect how people view themselves.
“Whether people internalize beauty standards, whether it will increase their body image or appearance concerns,” Niu said, are all in mind.
For Dawn, the weird effect of her face was just one thing to add to the list of frustrations she had with TikTok: “It reminds me of a relationship with a very narcissist because they bombard you for a minute, they give you all these followers and all that attention and it feels great,” she said. “And then, for some reason, they just cut you off.”
