Your outerwear the system starts next to the skin. Your underwear (which is commonly known as the “base layer” in the outerwear industry) should be comfortable, not scratching, and should remove sweat from the outerwear layers so that you don’t get wet. Being wet has only been annoying, with discomfort caused by tremors and tears, or completely deadly if you are in cold weather.
The two things we look for in a base layer are how light it is and whether it has a hood. The latter is not necessary, but it is very comfortable on sunny days. There are a lot of inner t-shirts and basic layers out there; few are horrible, but few stand out as well. These are our favorites.
