HAVANA (Reuters) – Tropical storm Elsa arrived near the Bay of Pigs in Cuba on Monday morning off the south-central coast, bringing heavy rains and winds to places on the Caribbean’s largest island, and moved across the country to Florida.

While the Caribbean islands continued to face storm damage, the Cuban Meteorological Institute said it was moving northwest at 22 km / h (14 mph) and sustained winds peaking at 100 km / km (60 mph).

Elsa was about to land in the Bay of Pigs at noon and was leaving Cuba for the night, between Havana and the city of Matanzas, the institute said.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said there has been a tropical storm watch and a storm flood watch in much of western Florida that Elsa is expected to approach on Tuesday.

“We are closely following the trail of the Elsa storm across Cuba,” President Miguel Diaz-Canel tweeted earlier this morning. “Authorities are working across the country.”

More than 100,000 people have been evacuated in Cuba from the potential storm, most of them to the homes of relatives and friends, but also to thousands of government shelters, state media have reported.

“People have been evacuated from places where there may be flooding along the coast and the river, but so far we have had a constant drizzle, with no strong rain and wind,” said Jorge Lemus, a kayaker from the southern city. Cienfuegos-ena.

Evacuations were underway in the Havana capital on Monday morning, fearing heavy rains could bring down dilapidated buildings.

To top it all off, Cuba is also exacerbating coronavirus infections, which are at record levels.

State television showed images of farmers harvesting fruit and vegetables faster from the storm, and local authorities removed debris from the street to prevent it from flying in the wind.

The Miami NHC said in a statement that tornadoes were possible in southern Florida on Monday afternoon and Tuesday.

The approaching storm forced Florida officials to demolish the rest of the condominium building: https://www.reuters.com/world/us/crews-prepare-bring-down-partially-collapsed-florida-condo-ahead- the storm collapsed 11 days ago -2021-07-04, at least 24 people were killed yet 120 are missing.
