According to the Turkish Environment Minister, Yalova and Balikesir were among the cities where most of the mucus was cleaned.
Turkey has collected a total of 2,684 cubic meters (94,784 cubic feet) of mucilage in the Marmara Sea in the last seven days.
Sharing the latest updates on water purification efforts, Turkish Environment and Urbanization Minister Murat Kurum said on Tuesday that ongoing operations are underway and that they have been sent to dispose of the collected mucus.
According to him, there were the northwestern province of Yalova, Istanbul and the western province of Balikesir.
“In the 1,438 inspections we conducted on June 14, we imposed an administrative fine of 7.55 million lire ($ 881,239) on companies that did not meet the required requirements,” he said.
The muzzle, also known as the “sea beak”, is an overgrowth of microscopic algae called phytoplankton and is caused by rising seawater temperatures due to global warming, stagnant water and pollution.
On June 6, Turkish authorities announced a 22-point action plan to clear a floodwaters that covered parts of the country’s northwestern Marmara Sea.
Mukilago – mostly concentrated in and around Mudanya, Gemli Bay, Gebze and the surrounding areas, the coastal areas of Istanbul’s Anatolian side and also in the Prince Islands – partially covered the shores of the Marmara Sea.
The substance, which covers the coast of the northwestern Yalova province, was dispersed by the wind to coastal areas in the Cinnaric and Armutlu districts and to the village of Esenkoy, where they are important tourist sites.
