TOKYO (Reuters) – At least two people were killed in fear of heavy rains on Saturday after landslides in the central Japanese city of Atami left about 20 people missing, the NHK public broadcaster said.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga called on an emergency task force to deal with the crisis and called on people in the affected areas to be on alert.

“There may be more rainfall and we need to be careful,” Suga said in a television release.

The floods are reminiscent of the natural disasters that Japan suffered (including earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis). The capital Tokyo will host the summer Olympics, which began this month.

Two people were found in a state of cardiac arrest in Atami, 90 km southwest of Tokyo, and taken to hospital, NHK said.

He emitted images of collapsed and half-submerged houses as the water splashed the city with mud and debris. Partially submerged in social media images, rescue workers and rescue workers walked from the waist down through the water with a small life raft.

The Japanese military sent emergency rescues to the city, evacuating about 80 people there, NHK said.

About 2,830 homes in the area say they need to cut off electricity, citing Tokyo Electric Power.
