LONDON (Reuters) – The UK government is confident that a plan to remove a series of COVID-19 restrictions will take place in England on July 19, but is expected to wear a mask indoors, vaccination minister Nadhim Zahawi said on Sunday.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson earlier this week set out proposals to remove some of the rules on wearing a mask, social relationships and guidelines for working from home. The final permit is expected to be issued on Monday.
Some government scientists and critics have expressed concern that progress is being made to remove the restrictions, even as coronavirus infections increase. The government has argued that the high rates of vaccines in the UK have broken the link between infections and serious illness or death.
“I’m sure we can continue with the fourth step,” Zahawi told Sky News.
“It’s important to be cautious and careful and the guidelines we’re going to set for tomorrow will prove that, including the guidelines that people are expected to wear masks in indoor spaces.”
The Johnson administration has imposed a health policy on England, but not on Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.
Asked about a report in the Sunday Times, Zahawi said the gap between the administration of the first and second owners of COVID-19 will be reduced to four and a half weeks: “I’m a little surprised at where this story has come from.”
“Actual clinical data suggest that the eight-week interval provides additional reinforcement with two doses rather than shortening that interval in terms of protection.”
