The 15-member council unanimously approved a last-minute compromise resolution allowing the extension of the cross-border operation.
The UN Security Council has agreed to extend the cross-border aid operation to Turkey to Turkey, which will ensure that the UN provides millions of Syrian aid for 12 months.
The Council reached an agreement after agreeing on a commitment to expand humanitarian aid to expand the activity on a single border crossing to the northwestern Syrian region with Russia in last-minute talks with the United States.
“Parents can sleep tonight knowing that they will feed their children for the next 12 months. The humanitarian agreement we have reached here will literally save lives, ”United Nations Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said Friday.
The long-standing aid was ordered by the operation council due to expiration on Saturday. After weeks of debate over the resolution by Ireland and Norway, Russia’s Syrian ally proposed a six-month renewal on Thursday.
Following talks between Russian Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield and Vassily Nebenzia on Friday morning, the 15-member council unanimously approved a six-month compromise resolution calling for a UN report on Syrian aid, but diplomats said they would extend the cross-border operation again in January.
U.S. President Joe Biden spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin and “the leaders praised the joint work of the relevant groups,” a White House note read.
Naturally, the vote was considered a “historic moment” by the vote of the resolution presented by both the United States and Russia.
“For the first time, in addition to reaching an agreement between Russia and the United States, they presented a joint text supported by all members of the council,” he said.
“We hope that this scenario will be a turning point that will benefit not only Syria, but the entire Middle East region and the world.”
Ine Marie Eriksen said Soreide is “very pleased” with the Norwegian FM resolution.
“We believe this is a very important resolution. It is the lives of 3.4 million people who have no other way to get basic humanitarian aid,” Soreid told Al Jazeera.
“This is a milestone, it is the first resolution on Syria in almost five years that was unanimously approved, and I think it is also something to base on the political solutions that need to come to Syria,” he added.
Al Jazeera’s Resul Serdar, who reported on the Bab al-Hawa crossing on the Turkey-Syria border, said that despite the positive achievement, the resolution does not indicate a long-term solution.

Biden raised the importance of a cross-border aid operation with Putin in June. The Biden administration warned at the time that there would be a risk of future cooperation with Russia if Syria closed cross-border aid deliveries.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on the Security Council to renew the cross-border aid operation for another year, warning that failure to do so would be devastating for millions of people.
The council authorized a cross-border aid operation to Syria in 2014 on four points. Last year, Turkey reached a point in the rebel zone in Syria over the renewal of the four as a result of opposition from Russia and China.
Russia has said the aid operation is outdated and violates Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. In a coup against the US and others, Russia and China have also imposed unilateral sanctions on Syria’s dire situation.
