Vietnam has identified a new variant of Covid-19 as it struggles with the rise in infections

Vietnam says it has detected a new variant of the coronavirus, a hybrid of the Covid-19 virus found in India and the UK, that is easily transmitted through the air.

In notes Referring to state-controlled media on Saturday, the country’s Health Minister Nguyen Thanh Long said he had detected four Covid-19 patients carrying the newly identified hybrid variant of genetic sequencing at the country’s National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology.

Le Thi Quynh Mai, vice president of the institute, said the hybrid had not yet been recorded by GISAID, that the global initiative was focused on sharing information about the flu and other viruses, and that it did not yet have a name.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chin reported call “Urgent response measures in the midst of the intricate developments of the pandemic,” which is currently expanding from industrial parks at the heart of Vietnam’s export-oriented and R&D-oriented economy.

He said it was spreading rapidly in industrial areas, including Bac Ninh and Bac Giang, in the provinces that join the capital Hanoi. Samsung, Foxconn, and other foreign investors own factories.

Vietnam’s struggle with new infections and hybrid variants has come at a time when other Asian countries (including Taiwan and Thailand) that spread the virus in the first phase of the pandemic are on the rise.

Vietnamese authorities have vaccinated about 1m of the country’s 98 million people with the AstraZeneca vaccine, and have requested more doses of the jab and Pfizer vaccine goal to have 150m vaccine doses available this year.
