BERLIN (Reuters) – Volkswagen (DE 🙂 said on Thursday it was considering taking legal action to impose a fine against EU competition, and said the sanction on technical talks on emissions technology with other car manufacturers is a dubious precedent.
“The Commission is entering new judicial territory because, for the first time, it is treating technical cooperation as an antitrust violation,” the German automaker said after receiving a € 502 million ($ 593 million) fine.
“It is also imposing fines, even though the content of the interviews was never set and as a result the customers were not harmed in any way,” Volkswagen added in a statement.
Volkswagen called for clearer guidelines: “The large fines imposed in this case underscore the need for a broader orientation of the Commission so that legal uncertainty does not hinder innovation in Europe,” he said.
