The fight against Hawzen is part of a larger war between government forces and Tigrayan fighters in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia, which has resulted in massacres, gang rapes and the flight of more than 2 million people from the region’s 6 million people. While the government now has many urban centers, heavy fighting continues in remote rural villages like Hawzen.
While both sides are fighting, civilians, and especially children, are suffering. More and more children are being blown up in Hawzen and other surrounding areas, and at least 32 have been admitted to Ayder Hospital in the capital, Mekele region, for blasts from December to April.
Thirteen members cut the bodies, according to official records.
Haftom Gebru, a 12-year-old boy from Hawzen, was wounded by a shrapnel during an Orthodox Easter fight. An artillery shell struck a pile of stones in the family set and then appealed in the direction of the boy. When Gebru Welde Abrha’s 60-year-old father saw the boy’s left hand injured, he knew it would have to be cut.
“I’m so sad, I can’t explain,” the father said in a hospital room, his son angrily looking away. “I’m deeply sorry.”
Haftom Gebretsadi, a 17-year-old from Freweini near Hawzen, was also wounded by a round of artillery that struck his home in March. He quietly looked at the trunk of his right arm and shook his head.
“I’m very worried,” he said. “How can I work?”
Some young people who are victims of explosive trauma could have kept their horns if they had received first aid at the nearest health centers. But facilities like this are now shells – systematically looted, vandalized and turned upside down.
Eritrean soldiers set up camp at Hawzen’s First Hospital, which once boasted equipment ranging from X-ray machines to baby incubators. Now they throw it in the trash.
“It’s a bad feeling that I feel like a tiger,” said now-unemployed technician, 27-year-old Misigna Hagos.
“This hospital served thousands of people … Now it’s destroyed.”
