British companies stepped up their search for new employees as pubs, restaurants and other hospitality and travel companies appeared ready to remove coronavirus restrictions in England on Monday, a survey showed.

The number of job vacancies in Adzun rose to 987,800 in the first week of May, 18% more than at the end of March, which is before the reopening of non-essential trade and hospitality companies on 12 April.

Adzun said the companies that want to hire include Whitbread, Stonegate Pub Company and JD Wetherspoons, Nando’s and Pizza Express restaurant chains, Marriott hotels and Ryanair airlines.

“There are far fewer foreign workers seeking employment in the UK who are more than half interested in jobs in the UK before the pandemic, as these industries are hit hard,” said Andrew Hunter, founder of Adzun.
According to Adzun, 250,000 fewer jobseekers in Western Europe and North America applied for work in the UK each month between February and April before the pandemic.
“Employers in the UK cannot rely on workers abroad to fill job gaps,” Hunter said.
