Wimbledon 2021: Serena Williams was forced to retire in the first round due to an ankle injury

Serena Williams will not be winning her eighth Wimbledon title this year. In Tuesday’s first round match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich, Williams suffered an ankle injury that forced him to retire from the match.

WIlliam slipped on the grass in the sixth game of the opening set and quickly left the Center court to receive treatment. After being away for about 10 minutes, Williams returned, but he was clearly in pain when he tried to serve with tears in his eyes. When he could not serve, Williams withdrew from the match.

He gestured to the people in front of the court.

Williams was not the only player injured on Tuesday at Wimbledon.

Frenchman Adrian Mannarino was 2-1 when he injured his knee against Roger Federer, even slipping on the grass. He soon retired from the match.

It was the second time Williams had been forced to retire from the Grand Slam tournament due to a second injury. Williams squeezed the dog’s muscle two games with Virginia Ruano Pascual in a 1998 Wimbledon match.

Williams currently has 23 Grand Slam titles and only needs one more to tie Margaret Court all the time. His last Grand Slam title came at Wimbledon in 2016.
