The partially blocked bowel is the latest complication for the Brazilian president after being stabbed in 2018.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro will not need surgery, his doctors said, adding that the far-right leader was partially blocked in the intestines and taken to hospital a day later.

“President Jair Messias Bolsonaro’s intestinal subocclusion has been removed without the need for surgery,” Sao Paulo’s Vila Nova Star Hospital said in a statement on Tuesday.

Bolsonaro showed a “gratifying” clinical improvement and will start a liquid diet on Tuesday, the release says. Doctors injected him with a nasogastric tube immediately after he was hospitalized.

No release date has been set, he added.

Bolsonaro’s decision not to undergo surgery came after his doctor, Antonio Macedo, was on holiday in the Bahamas and arrived in Sao Paulo on Tuesday morning after re-evaluation.

Bolsonaro has undergone a number of emergency operations since being stabbed in a campaign event in September 2018.

Bolsonaro, 66, suffered a stomach ache during a New Year’s beach holiday in the southern state of Santa Catarina and was taken to hospital on Monday morning on a presidential plane.

It is the latest in a series of health problems since he was stabbed in the stomach during the 2018 election campaign.

Doctors diagnosed a partial intestine and said on Monday that he could have surgery, nine months before the October elections in Brazil.

Bolsonaro has undergone at least four operations as a result of a knife attack that nearly killed him, made by a man who said he was following God’s commandments, and was later found mentally unfit for trial.

The president tweeted a photo of himself lifting his thumb from the hospital bed on Monday, with his face fitted with a nasogastric tube, a device for carrying food and medicine from his nose to his stomach.

This is the second time she has been in the hospital with the same symptoms.

In July 2021, he was taken to Vila Nova Star for an intestinal blockage after suffering from chronic diarrhea.

Bolsonaro has been in power since 2019, and is scheduled to be re-elected as president in a vote in October this year.

Bolsonaro’s approval rating is at an all-time low, as Brazil is stuck in a recession and as a result of one of the most serious COVID-19 outbreaks in the world.

He is currently behind his top opponent, former left-wing president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (2003-2010), who says recent polls suggest he could win the election in the first round.
