MOGADISHU (Reuters) – A suicide car bomb aimed at a government group in the Somali capital exploded at a busy crossroads in the Somali capital on Saturday, killing at least eight people, a witness told Reuters.
Abdiasis Abu Musab, a spokesman for the operations of the al-Shabaab militant group linked to al-Qaeda, told Reuters that he was responsible for Saturday’s attack. A group that seeks to overthrow the government and impose a strict interpretation of Islamic sharia law often carries out these bombings.
The convoy was carrying senior police officer Farhan Qarole, who survived the attack, a Somali government news agency reported.
“I saw eight bodies in the area including the woman,” Hassan Sayid Ali, a three-wheeled motor vehicle taxi driver, told Reuters at a crash site at the Banadir intersection in Mogadishu.
