(Reuters) – Two suspects were arrested on Tuesday after a shooting killed and seriously injured a student outside a special needs school in the Minneapolis neighborhood, police said. They also recovered a gun.

Authorities provided little information on the circumstances of the bloodshed and did not receive any questions from reporters in a post-shooting news release.

The two were shot dead at noon on a sidewalk near the front entrance of the Richfield, Minnesota Southern Education Center in a city of about 37,000 residents near Minneapolis, police chief Jay Henthorne told reporters.

The victim, both of whom were enrolled as students, was taken to a nearby hospital, one of whom died of his injuries and the other in critical condition, Henthorne said.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune, citing friends and relatives, identified the deceased young man as 15-year-old Jahmari Rice, who was living with his grandmother. According to his former football coach, Tuesday was Rico’s first class day at the South Education Center.

The suspects made a quick escape after the shooting, Henthorne said, while many of the attackers were free or without providing information about the cause.

Police searched the school and its surroundings and “decided there were no more threats” before removing the preventive blockade of the education center and other nearby schools, the chief said.

The police department later released a statement on the network saying that two suspects in the shooting had been arrested and that a gun had been seized as authorities issued search warrants at both addresses in Minneapolis.

Police did not provide further details about the investigation, except to say they were looking for more suspects.

The Richfield School Center offers special education programs for about 200 students from kindergarten through the age of 21, according to Sandra Lewandowsky, a school district superintendent.

WCCO television reported that the school was under blockade after a student was found with a gun in September. That student was arrested and no one was injured, the WCCO said.
