(Reuters) – Right-wing Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio was released from prison on Friday in December 2020 after four months and weeks of burning a Black Lives Matter banner in a historic African-American church in Washington.
Tarrio was among a group of Proud Boys who stole a banner at a demonstration in Washington on December 12, 2020. Tarrio then set him on fire, according to subsequent comments. He pleaded guilty in July, was convicted in August and began serving a prison sentence in September.
Tarrio did not take part in the deadly riots of January 6, 2021 in the US Capitol. He was arrested when he arrived in Washington two days before Congress failed to avoid the certificate that Democratic Democrat Joe Biden had won in the November 2020 election by defeating Republican President Donald Trump.
The FBI has said that the January 2021 arrest was intended to prevent the events of January 6 when several other members of the Proud Boys group were arrested.
These members of the right-wing group denounce the obstruction of law enforcement, the destruction of government property and conspiracy.
