MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – The uprising of Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in a major opposition stronghold lasted just two days, the state prosecutor said after posting photos of the alleged vandalism on social media.
The statue was unveiled on Thursday by Mayor Roberto Tellez Monroy in the central Mexican town of Atlacomulco, the birthplace of Enrique Pena Nieto Lopez Obrador’s predecessor.
Lopez Obrador, leader of the National Revival Movement (MORENA), ruled the city until it fell into the hands of the long-running Institutional Revolutionary Party or PRI.
“The state was demolished,” a spokesman for the state prosecutor’s office said. “It was an act of apparent vandalism.”
To begin an investigation, the prosecution needs a complaint that has not been filed so far.
Photos shared on social media showed a headless statue lying on the ground.
Lopez Obrador remains well-known in Mexico with 64.3% of his approval, according to a recent Mitofsky poll on Saturday.
Atlacomulco City Council did not immediately respond to requests for information about the incident.
In the past, Lopez Obrador has said he disagrees with putting up pictures of his person.
