(Reuters) – The National Hockey League (NHL) has postponed its return from holiday break for another day after delaying its 14-match schedule on Monday to give leagues and teams time to assess their ability to compete and compete in COVID-19.
With the latest delays leading to a total of 64 games, the NHL said on Friday that it plans to resume the regular season on Tuesday.
“In order for the league to have a good chance of analyzing the results of the league-wide tests and assessing whether the clubs are ready to play, the target date for the resumption of the match will be delayed by another day,” the league said.
“The team will return to training on December 26. It is expected that the league will provide an update on plans to return to play by the end of Sunday’s game.”
The league was originally scheduled to close Friday through Sunday for Christmas, but the NHL and its players’ unions agreed this week to advance the closure from Wednesday to Saturday as coronary virus cases rise.
NHL players will not be competing in the men’s ice hockey tournament at next year’s Beijing Winter Games due to concerns about COVID-19. The league said it would use the Olympic window to reschedule delayed matches.
