MELBOURNE (Reuters) – Australia reported a record number of new COVID-19 cases on Saturday for the third day, with outbreaks in the two most populous states, but Prime Minister Scott Morrison continued to reduce risks as the country eased its pandemic.
The state of New South Wales reported 2,482 new cases, the state of Victoria 1,504 new cases and the state of Queensland reported 31 new cases on Saturday, ahead of the previous 3,820 cases in Australia.
Morrison reiterated on Saturday that attention should be on hospitalizations and intensive care in cases and ventilators while the country learns to live with the virus.
So far, the number of cases in New South Wales has risen, saying there was no pressure on hospitals, with only 26 people in intensive care.
“I wouldn’t agree with the Australians being satisfied with that. We take this very seriously. It’s best to deal with a calm mind and a clear plan,” Morrison told the media in Tasmania, Hobart.
He said Australia is not in the same situation as the UK, Europe or North America, where cases are on the rise.
In order to alleviate the pandemic’s limits, fully vaccinated international travelers to Sydney and Melbourne will not have to be isolated for 72 hours, the governments of New South Wales and Victoria said on Friday.
Entry passengers will be required to undergo a PCR test within 24 hours of arrival, but will only need to be isolated until a negative test result is received.
“We know this has been a difficult time for international travel with the new rules and the emergence of the Omicron variant, but this prediction is to simplify the process and ensure a coherent vision for Australia’s two largest cities,” said New South Wales Prime Minister Dominic Perrottet. he said in a statement.
Australia closed its borders in the aftermath of the 2020 pandemic, which reduced the number of COVID-19 cases compared to other rich nations. The country has so far recorded about 239,000 cases and about 2,130 deaths.
