Ghislaine Maxwell’s lawyers have called for a new trial following a jury allegation of sexual abuse.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Ghislaine Maxwell, who was convicted of sexually abusing Jeffrey Epstein last week, deserves a new trial, her lawyer said on Wednesday after a jury told Reuters she had been a victim of sexual abuse.
In a letter to Manhattan District Attorney Alison Nathan, who presided over Maxwell’s trial, Christian Everdell’s attorney said Christian Everdell said there were “unquestionable reasons” for a new trial to serve the interests of justice.
Everdell said it was a “very important issue,” as the jury’s disclosures, which asked Scotty David to identify only with her first and last names, “influenced the deliberations and persuaded other members of the jury to convict Ms. Maxwell.”
U.S. Attorney’s Office Damian Williams, who prosecuted Maxwell, did not comment.
Everdell filed the letter shortly after prosecutors won the British Socialist conviction for hiring underage girls for sexually abusing Epstein and asked Nathani to open an investigation into the jury’s statements.

The prosecutor said the jury’s statement to the media was “worthy of the judge’s attention” and called for a trial to be held a month from now.

Maxwell, 60, was convicted on Dec. 29 of sex trafficking and other charges for hiring and training minors in Epstein between 1994 and 2004.
He is serving a 65-year prison sentence and was expected to appeal his conviction after a month-long trial.
Epstein, a financier and convicted sex offender, committed suicide in August 2019 in a Manhattan jail while awaiting trial for his sex trafficking.
