SEOUL / TOKYO (Reuters) – North Korea launches ballistic missile on Tuesday, South Korean military and Japanese coastguard say, apparently launching second missile https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific / nkorea-diok -launch-wednesday-was-hypersonic-missile-yonhap-2022-01-05 Less than a week since the head of the lone state called for more military progress.

The alleged ballistic missile launch was detected at around 7:27 a.m. (2227 GMT) from the interior of North Korea from its east coast to the ocean, the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said in a statement.

The projectile appeared to have landed outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ), the Kyodo news agency reported, citing Tokyo government sources.

“It is very unfortunate that North Korea continues to fire missiles,” Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told reporters, and the United Nations said North Korea was a “hypersonic missile” and said it had just finished discussing how to respond to the launch last week.

North Korea’s nuclear-weapon warfare has sworn by leader Kim Jong Un’s New Year’s vows that he has vowed to strengthen the army in the face of an unstable international situation, amid interrupted talks with South Korea and the United States.

“The South Korean military maintains a willing stance (South Korea) and closely follows trends related to close US cooperation to prepare for additional firing,” the JCS statement said.

The South Korean and US intelligence agencies are conducting a detailed study for additional information, he added.

‘Significant threat’

Last week, South Korean military officials questioned https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/skorea-casts-doubts-north-koreas-hypersonic-missile-claims-2022-01-07 about skills. North Korea’s “hypersonic missiles” said the test was launched on Wednesday, saying it represented limited progress on ballistic missiles in Pyongyang.

Tuesday’s apparent launch saw the release of a joint statement condemning last week’s test by United States missions to the United Nations, including France, Ireland, Japan, the United Kingdom and Albania.

“These actions increase the risk of miscalculations and increase the risk and are a significant threat to the stability of the region,” US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said in a statement on Monday. These tests not only improve the capabilities of the North, but also extend to illegal customers and sellers what they can offer around the world, he added.

“(North Korea) makes these military investments at the expense of the well-being of the people of North Korea,” he said.

UN Security Council resolutions ban all North Korean ballistic missiles and nuclear tests, and impose sanctions as a result of the programs.

Thomas-Greenfield reiterated his call on countries around the world to enforce sanctions and return to talks with North Korea and abandon missiles and nuclear weapons.

“Our goal remains the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula,” he said.

The U.S. State Department did not immediately respond to Tuesday’s request for comment.

North Korea has said it is open to talking, but only if the United States and others abandon “hostile policies,” such as sanctions and military exercises.

Few observers expect Kim to completely abandon her nuclear arsenal. North Korea says its missile tests and other military activities are for self-defense and are similar to those regularly performed by other nations.
