Wireless headphones are one of those ideas that seems like a dream: insert a small headset into each ear and listen to music or take calls without tying them. Until recently, the reality was quite different. They were the first giant wireless sprouts, they died within hours and had a bunch of other problems. Fortunately, times have changed. There are plenty of new models that sound beautiful and (almost) work perfectly. After testing dozens of them over the last four years, here are our favorite wireless headphones in a variety of styles and prices.

How we define wireless headphones
We have seen the variants by many names: real wireless headphones, wireless prying really, completely wireless headphones, completely wireless headphones, wireless headphones. Here at WIRED, if a pair of headphones are connected to your phone / computer via Bluetooth and there is no cable that connects the left eye to the right, we call them wireless. Wireless sets typically have two popcorn-sized sprouts, each inside the battery, and a charging cradle that charges more battery and keeps them safe when you’re not wearing them. Others have a cord or neck that connects the two eyes together.
They’re liberating, but they do have problems, such as limited battery life (don’t buy from anyone with less than five hours), confusing controls, and relying on a charging case. They are easier to lose than traditional ears and replacing a sprout can be expensive.
