U.S. companies embraced the Juneteenth holiday rings for many

Not so much, it seems.

“Blacks aren’t that excited,” said Marshall, CEO of the Diverse & Engaged advisory team.

Then murder police George Floyd sparked mass protests last year and sparked racial calculations in the US. The American corporation adopted Juneteenth as a way to honor black Americans and show commitment to diverse and inclusive workplaces.

Juneteenth is commemorated on June 19, 1865, when Union Army General Gordon Granger entered Galveston, Texas, to free the last enslaved black Americans – two years after the Confederates surrendered in the Civil War. President Abraham Lincoln formally proclaimed the end of slavery.

While some black Americans acknowledge the delay the American company made to Juneteenth by turning it into a paid vacation, others, Marshall, complain that it feels like an empty gesture, especially when many companies fail to live up to the promises of diversity made at Floyd’s top protests. .

“What’s more significant to support this population?” I don’t think they will be very happy because a Juneteenth event is happening. They will be excited when there is real change in the organization, ”Marshall said.

In any case, Juneteenth is now the basis of the racial justice efforts of many companies, including Lyft, Colgate and BP, in reports on social impact and diversity that claim to accept the holiday.

About 9% of businesses will take over Juneteenth this year, according to a survey conducted by consulting firm Mercer, compared to 55 percent of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. President Joe Biden on Thursday has signed the bill Establishing Juneteenth as a federal holiday, the nation’s 11th.

Holiday opponents cited the economic cost of the lost work. Dakasha Winton, a black executive in charge of government relations at BlueCross BlueShield insurer in Tennessee, said Juneteenth deserves an educational approach to many corporate celebrations.

“Even if it’s the first time you’ve done something, you’re at least taking steps to do something and that’s the key,” Winton said.

Marshall believes Juneteenth’s recognition makes sense for black workers only when they are part of a cohesive plan for diversity, equity and inclusion.

“This day doesn’t just celebrate the past,” Biden said before the holiday was legally signed. “It requires action today.”
