WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The Biden administration will not immediately lift international travel restrictions, despite growing pressure from U.S. business groups and lawmakers, a White House official told Reuters on Wednesday.

In June, the administration launched inter-agency working groups with the European Union to discuss how to remove the restrictions with the UK, Canada and Mexico and finally resume travel.

“Although these groups have met several times, discussions need to take place with any country before announcing the next steps to reopen travel,” a White House official told Reuters.

“We have made tremendous progress in our vaccination efforts as in many other countries, but we want to make sure that we move deliberately and are in a position to reopen international travel in a sustainable way when it is safe to do so.”
