NEW DELHI (Reuters) – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday that he had decided to repeal three controversial farm laws that farmers have been protesting for more than a year, a significant rise in the government.

“Today I have come to tell the whole country that we have decided to repeal the three agricultural laws,” Modik said in a statement to the nation.

“In the parliamentary session that will begin later this month, we will end the constitutional process of repealing these three agricultural laws.”

Legislation introduced by farmers in September last year deregulates the sector, allowing farmers to sell products to buyers beyond government-regulated wholesale markets, where producers ensure a minimum price.

Small farmers say the changes make them vulnerable to competition from big business, and that they could eventually lose support for the prices of products like wheat and rice.

The government says the reform of the sector, which accounts for about $ 15.7 trillion of the economy, brings new opportunities and better prices for farmers.

The laws were to empower small farmers, but the government did not convince some farmers who are against the new laws, Modik said.
