The 24-year-old athlete died in a car accident before preparing to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.
Qatar runner Abdalelah Haroun, who won a bronze medal at the 2017 World Championships, has died in a car accident in Doha, the Qatar Athletics Federation said on Saturday. He was 24 years old.
Mohammed Issa al-Fadala, the federation’s secretary general, said Qatar’s sports and athletics have “lost a great hero” on a global scale.
“After recovering from an injury (preparing), he was in a rehabilitation program to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics,” al-Fadalak said.
World Athletics is deeply saddened to hear that Qatar sprinter Abdalelah Haroun – the 2017 400-meter world bronze medalist and former junior world champion – has died at the age of 24 in a car accident.

The Qatar Olympic Committee also deplored the loss on Saturday.
“# Qatar team sprinter and world champion 400m bronze medalist Abdalelah Haroun died today,” he posted on Twitter – along with a black-and-white photo of the athlete with a bouquet of flowers and a Qatar flag.

Haroun, who is of Sudanese descent, first represented Qatar in 2015. In his early days he stole the spotlight by recording remarkable times of over 400 meters.
He finished third in the IAAF World Championships held in London in 2017 with 44.48 seconds behind South African winner Wayde van Niekerk and Bahamian athlete Steven Gardiner.
Haroun also won silver at the 2016 Portland World Hall of Fame and gold at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta.
