The first couple had been a German shepherd for 13 years and lived in the White House.

U.S. President Joe Biden has announced that Champ, the eldest of the family’s two dogs, has died “quietly at home”. The German shepherd was 13 years old.

“For the past 13 years he has been our constant loving friend and has been adored by the entire Biden family,” Biden and his first wife, Jill Biden, said in a statement posted on the president’s official Twitter account. Biden spends the weekend at home in Wilmington, Delaware.

Biden received Champ from a cattle rancher after Biden was elected vice president in 2008, when Champ became a ship at the headquarters of the Vice President of the Maritime Observatory and now in the White House.

In their statement, Biden said he was a young Champ, “happiest with golf balls in the front lawn of the Sea Observatory,” and recently “liked to meet as a relaxing presence at meetings or the White House garden.”

“In our happiest and most unhappy days, he was with us, sensitive to every unspoken feeling and emotion,” Bidens said.

Champ’s past was left to Bidens by a younger German pastor, Major, who was taken over by the family in 2018 from the Delaware Humane Society.

Occasionally Bidenas was seen walking their two dogs on the White House’s South Lawn, and sometimes the dogs would join the president on trips to Camp David or on their way home to Delaware.

Major has brought out the titles of past bad behavior. Major was injured in Biden’s foot in November while the then-elected president was playing after he stumbled upon a young dog.

Major and Champ were taken home to Delaware at one point, and the younger dog who began training Major had been bitten in the White House by two incidents and an unknown dog appears to have shit in a White House corridor.

Champ, who showed his age in recent months with his gray skin and slower gait, tended to have a calmer presence.

Biden is expected to bring a cat to the White House soon to reunite with the family.
