Dozens have disappeared after a Nigerian ship sank in ship 160 Nigerian news

Dozens of people are missing in northwestern Nigeria after an overloaded boat carrying about 160 passengers sank in the Niger River, according to a local official.

The boat came out of central Niger and broke and sank on Wednesday on its way to the northwestern state of Kebbi, Abdullahi Buhari, head of the administration of Wara Ngaski district, said.

“A rescue operation is underway but 22 survivors and only one dead have been recovered,” Wara said. “We’re talking about 140 passengers who are still missing.”

Boat dumps are common on Nigerian waterways, mainly due to overcrowding and lack of maintenance, especially during the rainy season of the year.

Wara accused him of overloading Kebbi’s accident because the ship did not have to tranship more than 80 passengers.

The vessel was also loaded with sandbags from a gold mine, the official said.

Earlier this month 30 people drowned when an overloaded boat capsized in the central state of Niger.

According to emergency officials, the boat carrying 100 local merchants was split in two as they were returning from the local market after being hit by a storm in the storm.
