The interior ministry says at least 25 people have been killed in the blasts, most of them students.
A blast near a school in Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul, killed at least 25 people and injured dozens more, the Interior Ministry said.
Ministry spokesman Tariq Arian said the blast injured at least 52 people, most of them students.
He did not specify the cause or purpose of the explosion.
Ghulam Dastagir Nazari, a spokesman for the Ministry of Health, said 46 people had been taken to hospitals so far.
Angry crowds attacked ambulances and also hit health workers, Nazari said. He asked residents to cooperate and allow ambulances to enter the site for free.
Kabul has been on high alert since Washington announced plans to withdraw all U.S. troops by Sept. 11 last month, with Afghan officials saying Taliban has intensified attacks across the country.
No team has claimed responsibility for Saturday’s blast.
It happened in western Kabul, a very Shiite Muslim neighborhood that has been frequently attacked by ISIL (ISIS) fighters over the years.
Al Jazeera’s Filio Kontrafouri, reported from Kabul, said the attack took place around 5:30 p.m., Kabul time.
“When students finished classes, it’s time for them to go home, and we’re talking about the hundred students who went to school at that time,” he said.
According to her, witnesses reported three explosions that occurred, and “they were running about the girls who were terrified, crying, calling their mothers, trying to take everything they could to the hospital.”
More to follow.
