Dynascore’s AI Music Engine writes tracks that match your videos

They didn’t have much trouble finding musicians to compose melodies; Peter had a deep connection to the New York music scene, and people like Jarret needed something to occupy his time.
To write music with Jarrett and a small group of musicians, adapters and orchestrators on Broadway, Dynascore’s technical team came in at the best of their best in terms of domestic talent. Who better to write pieces reminiscent of visual drama than those who already pay every night?
The human problem
The golden ears of human composers are the key to Dynascore’s latest success. The historical problem of AI-based or “algorithmically composed” music, according to Saatchi, was that most of the time he tried to write software instruments from scratch, rather than reinterpreting pieces he had already written.
“Making music that really connects with people is a human problem, so you have to start with people,” Saatchi says. “AI is a human overload.”
In the early days of Dynascore, Saatchi and the band were working on developing a way to break down original music and non-copyrighted classics (think Grieg’s “King’s Hall of the Mountain“) In segments called” morphones. “They would teach the AI a song and then ask them to recompose something similar, using the morphones of the original song as a guide. Then they would ask the musicians to critique the composition of the AI.
Perfectly fitting into a music video isn’t as easy as cutting out existing songs in preview ways. Organic transitions require a better understanding of key, rhythm, and intensity, among other musical markers. Thus, morphones do not only indicate the speed and key of a song. They also represent different tonalities and musical characteristics, all of which allow AI to find out how Lego music blocks come together in different ways.
After the development of the Morphone system, the band would feed the AI songs and re-compose them. It took a while until he was musically literate enough to make good choices.
“AI would compose a piece, and the musicians would say,‘ That was bad, ’” says Saatchi, laughing at the simplicity of the test. “He gets that opinion and learns from it, and all of a sudden it’s time to come up with coherent compositions.”
AI soon became intelligent enough to change transitions, blurs, interruptions, and other times prescribed by the user, in every tune he wrote. The version of Dynascore that I saw remixing the Moonlight Sonata was born.
