Immortality should be an option in every video game

It looks like death it is everywhere. Since the resurrection of Covid-19 thanks Delta variant and the effects of climate change are on the low vaccination rates that are destroying our communities, all reminiscent of humanity’s death, its fleeting existence. No wonder, then, that Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart it’s the right game right now: Play well, and you’ll never die.

Let’s clarify what “play well” means. The point is not to be so good that you never punch the card. Far away. Instead, the fight is to activate the possibility of immortality, ensuring that you don’t die in the fight. Yes, it sounds easy, but listen to me: this is not a challenge to avoid. It’s a good challenge; it encourages players to do things that aren’t perfect. How people master new button combinations, improve skills for goals, develop faster reflexes, all the things that turn them into one player. It’s incredibly gratifying.

Fear of death, on the other hand, can cause great anxiety. This little health bar feels like being tied to the rails after 10 espresso seats. It’s really why I stray from Mario games — I’m not very coordinated and I die too often (thank you, koopas!). Yes no satisfaction. Being able to activate immortality as best players can Rift Apart it simplifies a part of the game and ensures that this aspect is not constantly stressed. In this world where everyday life brings new risks and my daily life brings new risks, it is reassuring to be able to live forever Ratchet and Clankthe inter-dimensional world.

Also new Ratchet and Clank it’s not really about fight. It has a lot of puzzles and the gameplay is quite complex. To say that extinguishing death removes all challenges is to insult the goodness that Insomniac’s writers and developers put into this game. And you can still die; you can fall off the ledges quite easily. Being “immortal” in a year Rift Apart it removes a specific type of anxiety so you can enjoy the rest of the game. Unless the killer often has the hope to play and integrate into the experience (in which case let me know in advance so you can avoid it like a plague), all games should have this option. At a minimum, any AAA titles should be included to make the game available to as many people as possible (indie games have lower budgets, so they don’t always have the resources to fix these customization options). It’s hard to have difficulty levels, but being able to customize your gaming experience (immortality, self-help goal, press button change) is what makes the experience go from mediocre to horrible. Video games aren’t all about experience, and no one should expect that.

This is easy for me: I don’t want to die all the time. Like many, I play badly in fighting games, so being able to alternate immortality and be able to push a button during those fights without having to worry about my character’s health is fun. I don’t have to worry about my entertainment causing my anxiety or frightening me before I took the driver. It stresses the world enough; video games would have no value in making it worse.
