Tehran, Iran – Iran has unveiled a supercomputer – the most powerful to date – in a country developed by Tehran’s Amirkabir University of Technology (AUT), according to the state-run IRNA news website.
The supercomputer – in honor of the legendary Persian bird named Simorgh – currently has a yield of 0.56 petaflops and will reach a petaflop in two months.
He said the supercomputer was designed and built by a team of Iranian engineers, who developed the country’s first supercomputer ten years ago, but some of its hardware has been imported.
According to its computers, the supercomputer will provide large-scale data analysis services for many private and private research in the state. Among other things, it will be used to study artificial intelligence, crush traffic and weather data, and process images.
Ahmad Motamedi, president of Amirkabir, said that in addition to providing a service to the government, the supercomputer aims to provide a reliable infrastructure to companies focused on private companies.
“At the moment, knowledge-based companies have provided good platforms, but they do not have good infrastructure in the country, which leads them to use infrastructure outside the country,” he said at a press conference in the capital Tehran on Sunday.
The supercomputer has 42 shelves of approximately 250 square meters (2,690 square feet) based on the TIA-942 standard and is expected to be upgraded to 84 shelves located in an area of 400 square meters (4,305 square meters).
According to IRNA, the infrastructure put in place at Tehran’s AUT will enable the supercomputer to achieve a capacity of 10 petaflops in the next phases of its development, which will place it among the strongest international peers.
The university worked in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), which provided half of its trillion 1 rial ($ 4.5 million) budget and the scientific division of the presidential office and the science ministry had the remaining cost. .
ICT Minister Mohammad Javad Azari-Jahromi said work on the next supercomputer has already begun and Simorgh’s capacity will be 100 times higher.
He said in a tweet that the supercomputer will be named Maryam, after the late Iranian mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani, “to thank our Iranian girls for their efforts in the field of ICT.”
A professor at Stanford University, Mirzakhani died in 2017 at the age of 40 from breast cancer. In 2014, she received the Fields Medal, the most prestigious math award, and was the first woman and Iranian to receive it.
