The man from the eastern suburbs of Sydney is the first to catch the virus locally in more than a month.

Australia’s most populous New South Wales (NSW) state on Wednesday reported the first locally acquired case of COVID-19 in more than a month, and authorities have rushed to find the source of the virus.

A 50-year-old man who tested positive for the new coronavirus visited cinemas, restaurants, a service station and a butcher shop in Sydney’s eastern suburbs without knowing it was infectious, authorities said on Wednesday.

The infected person has not traveled abroad recently and is not working in high-risk jobs such as quarantine in hotels or hospitals, NSW State Health Director General Kerry Chant told Sydney journalists.

“So all the usual ways we could expect someone to get the infection are not clear,” Chant said. Close relationships have required them to take tests and self-isolate.

In Australia, there has largely been an outbreak of coronavirus through closed blockades, border controls and rapid contact search systems, with more than 29,800 cases and 910 deaths since the pandemic began.

He has reported zero cases most days this year.
