Over the past three decades Scott Edelman has published more than a dozen short stories that pay homage to his literary heroes, including John Steinbeck, Edgar Allan Poe, and Ray Bradbury. Edelman recently collected these stories in the book Tell me like you did before.
“I had enough stories, I think he made a good collection to honor all the people who inspired me,” Edelman says in section 476. Guide to the Geek Galaxy podcast. “I’m happy to be able to come forward and thank the people who helped me shape people.”

Unfortunately, the 50-page play about zombies was very difficult for the editor. “Someone was doing an anthology of zombies, and I thought,‘ Oh, this is absolutely perfect, ’and I sent it, and the response was,‘ I don’t like Shakespeare, ’” Edelman says. “So it had nothing to do with the story, either I got it right or there was poetry in the language. It’s just, ‘We don’t like Shakespeare.’ “
Edelman eventually released his first and only self-published work. “I collected it as a Halloween card for a year, and sent it to all my friends, and it was published based on that The Mammoth Book of the Best Horror News, and based on that publication, he got a nomination for the Bram Stoker Awards, “says Edelman.” Stories have weird ways to publish and acknowledge, so I always tell people, ‘Don’t worry if things take a while to find the right audience.’
