JAKARTA (Reuters) – Ten people trapped after the eruption of the Semeru volcano in Indonesia have been rescued, the country’s disaster relief agency (BNPB) said on Sunday that the death toll had risen to at least two and injured dozens.

Semeru, the highest mountain on the island of Java, threw ash and hot clouds towers on Saturday to cover villages in the East Java province and flee in terror.

The eruption cut off a strategic bridge that reduced two strategic bridges and buildings linking two areas of the Lumajang district to the city of Malang, authorities said.

BNPB official Raditya Jati told Reuters that 10 people trapped near the mines near the volcano had been evacuated without clarification.

Thoriqul Haq, a local official in Lumajang, said earlier that the sand miners were trapped in their work sites.

Emil Darda, the deputy governor of East Java, told Metro TV that one more death had been reported, bringing the total to two.

The BNPB said at least 35 people had been hospitalized, while the Lumajang deputy chief said 41 people had suffered burns.

Semeru, more than 3,600 meters (12,000 feet) high, is one of Indonesia’s nearly 130 active volcanoes. It exploded in January and caused no casualties.

Indonesia is located on the “Pacific Ring of Fire”, an area of high earthquake activity, where different crustal plates meet and create many earthquakes and volcanoes.

A magnitude 6 earthquake struck northern Halmahera on Sunday, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC). Halmahera is located 2,000 km (1,200 miles) northeast of Semer.
