BEIJING (Reuters) – China’s Council of State has appointed a female deputy minister to head the anti-confidence office in its regulatory market, the human resources ministry said on Monday as the government stepped up its campaign to hold large corporations.

Gan Lin, now Deputy Minister of State Administration of Market Regulation (SAMR), was highlighted earlier this year for his role in the anti-monopoly campaign.

The statement announcing his appointment also referred to the anti-trust unit of SAMR as the National Anti-Monopoly Office.

A change in the name and seniority of the incumbent bureaucrat may herald an improvement in the state of the anti-trust office.

At the request of President Xi Jinping, the low-profile MRSA has once been headed by this year to eradicate and punish anti-competitive behavior, especially in the broad online “platform” economy.

Reuters reported in October that China was considering increasing the status of the office.

A higher ranking would help anti-competitive researchers gain resources when analyzing mergers and acquisitions, sources said.
