Author / chef Mariana Velásquez says:

Barranquilla is a modern expansive city that sits at the mouth of the Magdalena River, overlooking the Caribbean Sea. Barranquilla, known as La Arenosa (Sandy One), organizes the biggest carnivals of the year in the country, mixing African, indigenous and world traditions. In fact, it is one of the largest carnivals in the world, even if it is not known to international tourists. People take to the streets, dress up and dance, drink and eat at night, taking the next day and night and day again.

The pinch Barranquilla came to me on a hot evening. I was in meetings on a quick visit to the city and lunch was far away. Dehydration, underestimated. I reached the sidewalk under the tin roof and found a bunch of school students there, chatting and joking, while the spoons poured tons of lime and ice into the tall glasses of crushed watermelon. The watermelon chunks in the lime juice last long enough to make the flavor more intense, making the watermelon chunks softer. It was the perfect antidote to fatigue and hunger.

In this regard, there is nothing special about watermelon fist recipes, except that the flavors combine so well to make a nice summer drink.
