USA: Gunman storm celebrates birthday party in Colorado, killing six people in US and Canadian News

Police said the killer killed six people in the city of Colorado Springs before taking his own life.

A man has shot dead six people, including his girlfriend, before turning his gun on himself at a Colorado birthday party, U.S. state officials said.

Police arrived in the city of Colorado Springs, killing six people plus one-seventh seriously and dying after being taken to hospital on Sunday, police said.

While the children were at a mobile home birthday party, they were not harmed.

“The suspect, the boyfriend of a female victim, went to the residence, went inside and started shooting people at the party before taking his own life,” a document released by the Colorado Spring Police Department said.

“Friends, family and children gathered inside the trailer to celebrate when the shooting happened,” the document says.

A motive is yet to be determined.

The shooting occurred in the Canterbury Manufactured Housing Community, a 470-trailer mobile home park about 110 miles south of Denver.

Police blocked the area, and a mobile crime lab was near the home. There was a small group of adults around, some of whom were listening to sobs, along with a small child.

Freddie Marquez, 33, said his mother-in-law was among the victims and was at the party, but he left around 10:30 p.m., Saturday.

After midnight, she received a call from the son of one of the women at the party, who was crying on the phone.

“Someone came in and shot everyone,” Marquez told Reuters, telling him over the phone.

The Denver Post mentioned that neighbor Yenifer Reyes was awakened by the sound of gunfire.

“I thought it was a thunderstorm. Then I started listening to the sirens, ”Reyes told the newspaper.

He said police saw the children get out of the trailer and get into a gang car.

“They were crying hysterically,” Reyes said.

On Sunday police were yet to release the identities of the shooter or the victim.

“My heart is broken for families who have lost someone they love and children who have lost their parents,” Colorado Spring Police Chief Vince Niski said in a statement.

Gov. Jared Polis noted that the attack took place on U.S. Mother’s Day, “because many of us are spending the day celebrating the women who have made us the people we are today.”
