Russian tennis player Yana Sizikova and a doubles specialist competing in the French Open were arrested in Paris on Thursday as part of a police investigation into a match-fixing scandal. Sizikova, 26, is involved in a recent investigation into sports corruption and organized gang fraud around the French Open last year. According to The Guardian.

Bookmakers were warned for unusual betting patterns at one of Sizikova’s matches last year, The Guardian reported that they bet thousands of euros on a 2-2 serve break. Sizikova scored three of the points in her game, including two double failures, when she lost 7-6.

After losing 6-1 in the first round doubles match on Thursday, Sizikova was arrested for leaving a massage session. If convicted, Sizikova could face up to five years in prison and a fine of 500,000 euros.

According to Samuel Petrequin of the Associated Press, Sizikova was released on Friday and has not been formally charged after questioning, although he is still under investigation. In front of the media, Sizikova’s lawyer Frederik Belot said that Sizikova’s situation was “extremely shocking” and that he wanted to file a complaint for defamation.

“He was arrested as a criminal. He says he is innocent and did not want to help with the interrogation because he considers himself a victim,” Belot said.

Sizikova is currently ranked 101st in the world in doubles and 765th in singles, and spent much of her career competing in low-level tournaments in the International Tennis Federation competition. The French police unit, which opened a lawsuit specializing in fraud and match-fixing cases, has previously worked with Belgian authorities to investigate suspicious matches at lower levels of professional tennis.
