MOSCOW (Reuters) – Belarus wants to deploy Russian-capable Iskander missile systems in the south and west of the country, President Alexander Lukashenko said in an interview with Russia’s defense magazine on Saturday.

Russia is a close ally of Belarus, and the European Union has accused it of engineering a crisis on its border by encouraging thousands of immigrants to fly and try to cross into Poland illegally. Brussels is preparing to punish Minsk.

Lukashenko told National Defense magazine that Iskander needed a mobile ballistic missile system with a range of up to 500 kilometers and capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear warheads.

“I need several divisions in the west and south, let them stand (there),” he said.

EU members are located in western Poland and Lithuania in Belarus. Its south borders Ukraine.

Lukashenko did not say whether he had spoken to Moscow about receiving the missile system.

The Russian Ministry of Defense did not immediately respond to the request for comment.

Belarus and Russia are formally part of a “union state” and have been in talks for years.
