Thousands of websites went offline for nearly an hour on Tuesday morning, including the world’s largest news sites, streaming services, online outlets and even the UK government, disrupting millions of internet users.

Connectivity issues that last nearly an hour seem to have affected news sites such as the BBC, New York Times and FT.com, streaming services Spotify, Twitch, Hulu and HBO Max, the payment service Stripe and Reddit message board. Together online services reach hundreds of millions of people every day.

Disruption of the Gov.uk UK website network could cause problems for people who have booked Covid-19 vaccines or reported test results.

A Silicon Valley-based Internet infrastructure provider called Fastly is believed to be behind the disruption. Fastly did not immediately respond to the request for comment.

A content delivery network works fast, designed to facilitate faster upload times of larger files such as websites and music and videos. Major CDN providers include Cloudflare, Akamai and Limelight.

CDNs store corporate customer data on servers around the world, easing the burden of the Internet’s “backbone” by bringing content closer to consumers ’smartphones and computers.

The last online status sheet It started reporting problems with CDN services at 09.58 UTC.

About 45 minutes later he said: “The problem has been identified and a fix is being implemented.”

Fastly’s website includes e-commerce platforms Shopify and Stripe and merchants like Wayfair, Boots, Dunelm, Ticketmaster and Deliveroo.

Stripe said in a tweet on his status page, “We are currently investigating an issue that cannot be loaded with the Dashboard and Help Center. We will post the update soon.”

Shares of Fastly, which has a market capitalization of less than $ 6 billion on the New York Stock Exchange, were about 2% lower on Tuesday in pre-market trading. The ten-year-old company is headquartered in San Francisco.
