FRANKFURT (Reuters) – The European Union plans to pass laws in the coming months to urge technology companies to do more to combat child sexual abuse by strengthening current voluntary agreements, a senior official said in a newspaper interview.

EU Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson told Welt am Sonntag in Germany that Internet service providers and social media companies have reported 22 million crimes related to child sexual abuse in 2020, more than 17 million in 2019.

But he said that was only part of the real number.

“I will be proposing legislation in the coming months that will require companies to detect, report and eliminate child sexual abuse,” Johansson said.

“Then the voluntary report will not be enough.”

Under current EU rules, social networks and mail and messaging services like Facebook (NASDAQ 🙂 and Google (NASDAQ 🙂 have the option to track whether or not to track violations.

Johansson said the fight against child abuse needs to be better coordinated and that a specialized European center is needed to improve prevention, law enforcement and victim support.
