(Reuters) – Texas County Harris reported the first death of a Omicron COVID-19 variant on Monday, a man without a vaccine, the county health department said.
The first known Omicron death in the United States is believed to be known, ABC News reported. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The victim, aged 50-60, was at higher risk for serious complications from COVID-19 because he was unvaccinated, the health department said in a statement.
County Judge Lina Hidalgo tweeted that the man was the first to die of the variant.
“Please get vaccinated and push,” Hidalgo said.
The Coronavirus variant Omicron accounts for 73% of U.S. coronavirus infections based on sequencing data for the week ending Dec. 18, the CDC said Monday.
In early December, Britain announced the first publicly confirmed death in the world at the hands of Omicron. Twelve people have died in Britain now with the variant, and 104 are in hospital that day, Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab told Times Radio on Monday.
